Professor Peter Schofield AO

Professor Peter Schofield headshotProfessor Peter Schofield is CEO of Neuroscience Research Australia (NeuRA) and Professor of Medical Sciences at UNSW Sydney.

He has worked in the biotechnology industry and research institutes in the US, Germany and Australia including the Garvan Institute where he was Director of the Neurobiology Program. He commenced his current role as NeuRA CEO in 2004. His research in neuroscience has defined fundamental mechanisms of brain signaling and his current research interests focus on understanding the genetic contributions to neurodegenerative (eg Alzheimer’s) and psychiatric (eg bipolar) disorders.

Professor Schofield has served on many scientific and advocacy bodies, including as Interim Director of the NHMRC National Institute of Dementia Research, as CEO of the Schizophrenia Research Institute and as Joint Interim CEO of the Mindgardens Neuroscience Network, which aims to establish Australia’s first comprehensive brain disorders centre. His research has been recognised by awards including the Gottschalk Medal by the Australian Academy of Science and the degree of Doctor of Science by the University of New South Wales. He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science in 2015 and was recognised in the 2019 Australia Day Awards as an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to medical and scientific research in the field of neuroscience, and to professional institutions.
