2017 AAMRI Convention – final program now available

The Convention will take place on 6 and 7 December and we have a great line up of speakers including Prof Ian Frazer AC (President of the Academy of Health and Medical Sciences), Dr Alan Finkel AO (Chief Scientist), and Prof Anne Kelso AO (NHMRC CEO). Places at the Convention are limited and filling up quickly,  so make sure you register today!

New AAMRI Research Managers’ Network

AAMRI is establishing a new Research Managers’ Network. The network will help put MRI research managers in touch with one another, discuss emerging sector issues, and help encourage collaboration between members.

The network will host a one day Research Managers’ Network event in April 2018. If you are interested in joining the network, or the organising committee for the event please contact enqiuries@aamri.org.au

AAMRI welcomes $300M health security initiative

The Foreign Minister, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, announced a new $300 million health security initiative while at AAMRI member, the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. The five year initiative is the single biggest investment in health and medical research under the banner of the Australian aid.

Samuel Johnson remembers the woman who will always inspire him

In response to AAMRI’s tribute to Connie Johnson, her brother Samuel Johnson has written a piece in which he discusses Connie’s advocacy efforts for the establishment of the MRFF.

AAMRI legal templates

A reminder that AAMRI has three draft template contracts to assist members undertaking collaboration with industry and other partners. These three templates are a mutual confidentiality agreement, a collaboration agreement, and a material transfer agreement.

Policy update

Australian Government supports recommendation for National Open Access policy

The Australian Government has issued its response to the Productivity Commission report on IP and has supported the recommendation for a national open access policy.

QLD: New strategy to drive Queensland’s health and medical research

Queensland: Advancing Health Research 2026 is designed to guide Queensland Health’s research investment decisions and actions to achieve positive health outcomes. The roadmap is backed by $10 million of new funding


2018-19 Pre-Budget submissions

The Treasurer has called for Pre-Budget submission on the priorities for the 2018-19 Budget. Submissions are due by 15 December 2017, a month earlier than usual. AAMRI will be developing a submission covering the priorities for health and medical research.

Business process improvements supporting complementary medicines assessment pathways

The TGA is seeking comments from interested parties on a range of reforms to the regulatory framework for complementary medicines. Submissions close on 7 November 2017.

Skilled Migration Occupation List Consultation

The Department of Employment is undertaking a consultation to gather data and information to inform the six monthly review of the Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) and Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Submissions are due on 20 October 2017.

Guidance on the Application of the Australian Consumer Law (ACL)

Comments are invited on the draft application guidelines of the Australian Consumer Law to the activities of charities, not-for-profit entities and fundraisers. Comments are due by 27 October.


NHMRC new grant program public consultation on peer review

The NHMRC has released a consultation paper on peer review within the new grant program. Responses to the paper are due on Monday 4 December 2017. The NHMRC are also hosting a series of public forums across Australia to get feedback.

AAMRI has assembled a working group to develop its submission to the consultation.

Latest NHMRC funding announcements

Nearly $200 million of NHMRC funding announcements were made on 11 October. These included the Career Development Fellowships, Centres of Research Excellence, Development Grants, Early Career Fellowships, International Colaborations, Partnerships, Practitioner Fellowships, and Research Fellowships.

Priority Round 3: National Dementia Network

NHMRC has allocated funding to support a multidisciplinary national team to establish and maintain a National Dementia Network. Applications close on 8 November 2017.

Self-nominations for 2018 peer review

Researchers are invited to self-nominate themselves to be considered for appointment to NHMRC peer review panels for the 2018 round. Nominations must be received in RGMS by 20 October 2017.

Targeted Call for Research into Social and Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples from Early Life to Young Adults

Applications for this targeted call will open on 15 November 2017.

Telethon Kids Institute awarded $1.5 million Lotterywest grant

The WA Government has awarded the Telethon Kids Institute $1.5 million from Lotterywest. The grant is being provided to build a Discovery Centre at the Perth Children’s Hospital. The centre will teach children about the development of better therapies and lifesaving cures.

Research Australia awards

Congratulations to Professor Kim Mullholland (Murdoch Children’s Research Institute) on being awarded the Peter Wills Medal at the Research Australia awards, Professor Timothy Hughes (SAHMRI) on receiving the the GSK award for Research Excellence.

Fifth national mental health and suicide plan

The plan calls for a strategic approach to research to ensure better treatment options are available in the future and.recommends involving consumers and carers in the prioritisation of research objectives.

AIHW: Mental health services in Australia

A report providing a picture of mental health services in Australia

AIHW: Trends in cardiovascular deaths

This report describes trends in cardiovascular disease death rates (including coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease) by age group using the latest available data.

ABS Research and Experimental Development, Business, Australia, 2015-16

The latest business R&D figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics

AIHW: Health of Australia’s males and females

The reports contain data on chronic conditions, risk factors and comorbidities, including some information on sex-specific health issues (for example, maternal health).

AIHW: Health Expenditure Australia

The latest Health Expenditure Australia report has been released detailing expenditure throughout the health system.

7.  Funding & award opportunities

Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship grants program 

The National Innovation and Science Agenda ‘Women in STEM and Entrepreneurship’ grants program is now open for applications. These grants provide between $5,000 and $250,000 for projects to develop activities to increase the participation of girls and women in STEM. Applications close on 15 November 2017.

NSW: Ignition Core 2018

Cicada Innovations in partnership with NSW Health has opened applications for the Medical Device Commercialisation Training Program’s (MDCTP) flagship course, Ignition CORE. This is a 12-week course that provides medical technologists with a tailored curriculum on how to transform their visionary concepts into viable businesses. Applications close on 22 November 2017.

Australia-China Science and Research Fund (ACSRF) Joint Research Centres

Applications are now open for Round 3 of the Australia-China Science and Research Fund (ACSRF) – Joint Research Centres (JRC). Applications close on 15 November, 2017.

National Science Foundation: Accelerating Research through International Network-to-Network Collaboration

The National Science Foundation has just issued a Dear Colleagues Letter seeking input on areas that are suitable for international network collaboration. Submissions are due 30 November.

OneVentures is searching for transformative companies at Ausbiotech 2017

OneVentures is inviting emerging healthcare companies to apply for a private meeting with members of the OneVentures $170M Healthcare Fund III team.

Singapore Fellowships

The Royal Society and the National Research Foundation in Singapore (NRF) has established a new Post-doctoral International Collaborative Fellowship for the Commonwealth. The Fellowships will be based in a Singapore institution.

2017 Asia-Pacific Regional Conference: Germany – Australia – Asia-Pacific

Austrade is inviting registrations for the inaugural Asia-Pacific Regional Conference (APRC) in Perth 3-5 November 2017. Political and business leaders from Australia, Germany and Asia Pacific nations will come together to share perspectives on how technological innovation is creating new global opportunities for cross border business partnerships in our region.

This event will be opened by the Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull and the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

ANSTO User Meeting (ARM 2017) – 22-24 November 2017

In addition to the Australian Synchrotron User Meeting, ARM2017 will also encompass the Australian Neutron Beam Users Group (ANBUG) annual user meeting that is held at ANSTO, Lucas Heights in November, and also feature research highlights from the Centre for Accelerator Science – also based at Lucas Heights. Abstracts are due on 18 October, and registrations close on 31 October.

ANDS health and medical research webinar series

The Australian National Data Service are hosting two health and medical research webinars:

Ausbiotech 2017 – 25-27 October 2017

The annual AusBiotech conference brings together Australian and international biotech leaders and stakeholders to reflect on the sector’s achievements and exchange ideas to further advance the sector’s standing both nationally and globally. This conference is the largest life sciences conference in Australia and will take place at the Adelaide Convention Centre on 25-27 October.
