2021 Investigator Grant outcomes for the medical research institute sector

4th November, 2021

A new AAMRI analysis on the 2021 NHMRC Investigator Grant outcomes has shown the medical research institute (MRI) sector had a success rate higher than the national success rate for the scheme.

Medical research institute researchers were awarded 121 Investigator Grants in 2021 and $211 million, representing over half (52.9%) of the total funding awarded in 2021.

This is 17 more grants from 58 fewer applications and $50 million more in funding for the MRI sector in 2021 compared to 2020.

The medical research institute sector was awarded the majority of all Leadership level grants and funding.

Nearly 60% of all Leadership grants and funding were awarded to the medical research institute sector. Outcomes for the L1 grants were the best (69.0% grants and 62.6% funding) followed by L3 grants (54.9% grants and 58.3% funding) and L2 grants (53.6% grants and 52.6% funding).

There was a 3.6% gap between the funded rates for men and women in the medical research institute sector.

This is about three times the gap in 2020 but half the size of the gap in 2019.

In 2021, women submitted about half (47%) the Investigator Grants in the medical research institute sector and received 42% of the total grants, and 35% of total funding.
