2021 NHMRC Grant outcomes for the medical research institute sector

AAMRI’s new analysis on the outcomes of the 2021 NHMRC grant program has shown that the funded rates for the medical research institute (MRI) sector was higher than the average funded rate in both major grant schemes in 2021 – Investigator Grants and Ideas Grants [1].

MRI researchers were awarded 129 Ideas Grants and and 121 Investigator Grants representing half the grants awarded in 2021 for the two major schemes.

MRI researchers were awarded $336.6 million in funding across both major grant schemes, representing over half (53%) the total funding available the 2021 round.

This funding included more than half the total funding for both schemes in 2021 - 52% of the Ideas Grant funding and 53% Investigator Grant funding.

The MRI sector has had equitable funded rates for men and women CIA² researchers in both 2020 and 2021 Ideas Grant rounds, with less than a 1% gender gap. This is an improvement on the outcomes in 2019, where men CIAs had a funded rate 4% higher than women CIAs.
