AAMRI congratulates Professor Sue Thomas on her appointment as ARC CEO

26th April, 2017

The President of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) has offered his congratulations to Professor Sue Thomas on her appointment as CEO of the Australian Research Council (ARC), noting her commencement in July will mark the first time that women have been heads of both of Australia’s leading research funding organisations.

Professor Tony Cunningham AO, AAMRI President, said he was delighted by Professor Thomas’ appointment, especially as she had a background in microbiology.

“It’s a mark of real progress in science gender equity terms to have Professor Thomas lead the ARC at the same time as Professor Anne Kelso leads the NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council),” Professor Cunningham said.

“We still have a long way to go, but having such intelligent and experienced women lead our two most important funding bodies is a great step in the right direction and should inspire the next generations of young women scientists to know that they can reach the top in both active research and research administration positions.

“Research funded by the ARC underpins many of the great scientific discoveries that have taken place in Australia. This discovery research in disciplines such as chemistry, biology, and mathematics is fundamental to making progress in health and medical research.

“We very much look forward to working with Professor Thomas on ensuring the research pipeline remains strong.”
