AAMRI congratulates The Hon Mark Butler MP on his appointment as Health Minister

The Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) welcomes the announcement of The Hon Mark Butler MP as Minister for Health and Aged Care. Having previously held the Ministerial portfolios for both Ageing and Mental Health, Minister Butler brings a wealth of experience to the portfolio.

 AAMRI said that the medical research institute sector is looking forward to working with Minister Butler. To find new ways to strengthen Australia’s healthcare system through enhanced utilisation of our world-class health and medical research.

“Australia’s healthcare system is underpinned by the critical work carried out by our talented researchers,” said Professor Kathryn North AC, AAMRI President.

“The discoveries and progress we make in preventative medicine, mental health, cancer, children’s health and age-related conditions, to name a few, are critical to the continuous improvement of our healthcare system. We have a vibrant and creative medical research sector and we look forward to working with Minister Butler, and contributing to the health and wellbeing of all Australians,” said Professor North.

AAMRI’s election statement identified the need for a national health and medical research strategy that sets out Australia’s research priorities and investments, as well as a plan to strengthen our medical research workforce.

“A national health and medical research strategy will help protect our valuable workforce, and our sector is looking forward to working with the Labor Government to create the strategy that will safeguard the future of Australia’s best and brightest scientists,” said Professor North.

AAMRI would also like to warmly congratulate The Hon Ged Kearney MP on her appointment as Shadow Assistant Minister for Health and Ageing.
