Professor Kathryn North AC appointed as new AAMRI President

25th November, 2021

The Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) is delighted to announce that at the association’s Annual General Meeting today, Professor Kathryn North AC will take over as President of AAMRI.

Professor North is Director of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, the David Danks Professor of Child Health Research at The University of Melbourne, and is trained as a physician, child neurologist and clinical geneticist. She brings an impressive career worth of passion and dedication to the presidency.

“It’s an exciting time to be taking on this position, when medical research is at the centre of so many people’s minds. There are many important conversations to be had about where we go next, and I’m looking forward to being a part of those,” said Professor North.

Professor North has previously held positions as chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council Research Committee from 2012-2018, and has chaired the International Advisory Board of the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (UK) since 2015.

“We’re about to enter an election year, so it is a great time to advocate for the future of the medical research sector,” said Professor North. “We need to ensure we are in the best position possible to meet any new health challenges, and that includes looking after our workforce to safeguard the sector for the future.”

Professor North takes over the position from Professor Jonathan Carapetis AM, Director of the Telethon Kids Institute, a leading infectious disease specialist and paediatrician.

“It has been an honour to serve as President and I’ve enjoyed working closely with AAMRI to achieve policy changes”, said Professor Carapetis. “I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved, while also advocating for the sector during COVID-19.”

“I’m really pleased to be able to handover to someone as experienced and respected as Professor North. I’m excited to see where she will take things next,” said Professor Carapetis.

AAMRI would like to thank Professor Carapetis for his excellent leadership over the past two years as he led the organisation through unprecedented disruption caused by the pandemic.
