AAMRI continues strong leadership with new President Elect Professor Elizabeth Hartland

The Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Elizabeth Hartland as its new President Elect.

Professor Hartland, Director & CEO of the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, is a highly regarded thought leader and researcher, currently a member of AAMRI Board and the Chair of the Victorian branch of AAMRI.

“Being part of the board for the past five years has been a great opportunity to work on behalf of the medical research institutes we represent. Now, moving to the role of President late next year I’m looking forward to continuing AAMRI’s work to ensure the long-term future of our workforce and the sector,” said Professor Hartland.

Prior to joining the Hudson Institute, Professor Hartland held the positions of Head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Melbourne and Deputy Director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity.

Professor Kathryn North AC, current AAMRI President, will work closely with Professor Hartland over the next year until November 2023 when Professor North will step down, and Professor Hartland’s appointment will begin.

“Professor Hartland is ideal for the position, and I was thrilled when she accepted the role. She has excellent knowledge of our sector, its policies, funding bodies and researchers and the challenges and opportunities coming up for medical research institutes,” said Professor North.

Professor Hartland will step away from her role as Chair of the Victorian Branch of AAMRI in late 2023 to focus on the AAMRI Presidency. Professor Ricky Johnstone, Executive Director of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre will take over as Victorian Chair.

AAMRI also welcomes new Board Members Professor Frances Kay-Lambkin, Institute Director of the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI), Professor Jason Kovacic, Executive Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, and Professor Peter Leedman AO, Director of the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.
