VicAAMRI welcomes the appointment of Minister Mary-Anne Thomas to the Medical Research portfolio
7 December 2022The Victorian Chapter of the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (VicAAMRI) is pleased to see the appointment of the Hon Mary-Anne Thomas as Minister for Medical Research. This appointment is alongside her existing position as Minister for Health and additional new roles as Minister for Health Infrastructure and Leader of the House.
Minister Thomas has made a significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of the community since her appointment as Victoria’s Health Minister in June this year. Her commitment to delivering the best healthcare and ensuring world-class medical and health services for all Victorians stands her in good stead for taking on the medical research portfolio.
“Minister Thomas has demonstrated, in a short amount of time, her strong commitment to enabling the best possible health and wellbeing outcomes for our community,” said Professor Elizabeth Hartland, VicAAMRI Chair and Director and CEO of Hudson Institute of Medical Research.
“We look forward to working with Minister Thomas in supporting that healthcare system, by turning research into life changing health care and medicine,” said Professor Hartland.
Despite the impact of COVID-19 on the operations of medical research institutes, medical research in this state remains a significant driver of Victoria’s economic growth. Continuing to invest in the medical research workforce and supporting institutes to manage the ever-increasing indirect costs of research will result in better health outcomes, a stronger economy and more skilled jobs for all Victorians.
“We are proud of our Victorian medical research institutes, they remain global leaders in cutting-edge health research, and are excited to work with Minister Thomas to continue to build on this reputation,” said Professor Hartland.
